Como tanta veces, ningún telediario había acertado con la previsión del tiempo y la tormenta nos sorprendió en la cima de la montaña. Primero vimos sobre nuestras cabezas una nube baja que cada vez se ponía más negra. Enseguida se levantó un fuerte viento y la temperatura descendió bruscamente. Sin darnos tiempo a sacar la ropa de abrigo de nuestras mochilas ya caían las primeras gotas de lluvia, gruesas y espaciadas, explotando en pequeñas burbujas cuando golpeaban contra las piedras.
Corrimos ladera abajo buscando refugio hsta que un gran destello nos paralizó. Fueron unos segundo en los que, junto a un fuerte trueno que casi nos derriba, todos pudimos ver una centella que impactó sobre una piedra, destrozándola. Oímos el silbido de las chispas que rebotaban de piedra en piedra y sentimos que el vello de la piel se nos erizaba.
Fue entonces cuando oímos la voz quye nos llamaba desde una cueva disimulada tras unos arbustos. En unos instantes estábamos ya a cubierto junto a aquel pastor que se protegía de la humedad con una manta de cuadros sobre sus hombros.
Todavía excitados por el susto le contamos al pastor lo del rayo. Él nos escuchaba en silencio mientras encendía con yesca una pequeña hoguera para que nos calentáramos. Parco en palabras, comentó que él le daban más miedo los rayos que las culebras, pero nos tranquilizó afirmando que en aquella cueva estábamos seguros, que allí no entraría ningún rayo. Nos hizo saber que él sabía de rayos más que nosotros, no en vano había pasado la mayor parte de su vida a la intemperie y había sido testiguo involuntario de la caída de un gran número de ellos: el que destrozó el chozo del tío Germán, el que rompió el reloj de la torre de la iglesia, el que le mató a más de treinta ovejas que sesteaban bajo un roble, ...
Aunque la tormenta no amainaba, estábamos ya algo más tranquilos, sentados en el suelo alrededor de la hoguera. El pastor seguía de pie, en el umbral de la boca de la cueva, con su tímida perra entre las piernas, mirando hacia el exterior. Sin que nadie le preguntara nada, comenzó a hablar:
- Hace miles de años todos los animales eran salvajes, hasta que se inventó el oficio de pastor y las vacas, ovejas y algunos lobos, pudieron ser domesticados. Fueron aquellos primeros pastores quienes descubrieron el secreto del rayo que ha ido pasando de generación en generación hasta llegar a nosotros.

El pastor hizo una larga pausa, buscó tabaco en sus bolsillos, lió un cigarrillo, se agachó para encenderlo en la hoguera y dio un par de caladas. El silencio en la cueva se hacía casi insoportable, pero enseguida el pastor continuó con su relato:
- Mi padre me tenía dicho que el rayo es como una chispa de fuego que lleva en la punta una piedra, parecida a los hachas, que está bien afilada. Es esa piedra la que hace el daño, la que abre un árbol por la mitad, la que destroza la chimenea de una casa, la que puede caer sobre una persona haciéndole un agujero desde la cabeza a los peis, como pudo ver él en el velatorio del pastor de Canales a quién mato el rayo hace ya bastantes años. Cuando el rayo cae, si no ha hecho ningún daño, con la fuerza que trae, la piedra que lleva en su punta se entierra en el suelo siete metros. Eso es cosa fija. Luego, cada año, la piedra va ascendiendo hacia la superficie hasta que, al séptimo año, ya puedes verla. Si tienes la suerte de encontrar una, ya no tienes que temer al rayo, porque esa piedra te protegerá siempre que la lleves encima.
-¿Y usted, tine la piedra de rayo?
- Claro, ya os dije que junto a mí estabais seguros. Y no tengo una, sino dos. Me las dio mi padre quien las había heredado de mi abuelo. Una la tengo bajo una teja de la casa y la otra siemrpe la llevo en el morral.

El pastor apartó la manta de sus hombros dejando ver el viejo morral de piel de cabra que llevaba cruzado sobre el pecho. Lo abrió con parsimonia, buscó entre la cecina y los trozos de pan duro y, como quien celebra un ritual, acercó lentamente a la luz de la hoguera su mano abierta sobre la que brillaba la

"piedra de rayo". Todos sentimos cómo un escalofrío recorría nuestra espalda.
De regreso a la ciudad comentábamos que lo del escalofrío fue, seguramente, por la humedad, y alguien añadió que, a lo mejor, aquello que vimos brillar en la mano del pastor era un hacha pulimentada de las que fabricaban los hombres prehistóricos, como la que vimos cuando visitamos la exposición que hicieron en el Museo de La Rioja
