Dramaturgo decimonónico. De Quel
La producción historiográfica sobre el comediógrafo y poeta español, nacido en Quel (La Rioja) el 19 diciembre de 1796 y muerto en Madrid el 8 noviembre de 1873, es amplísima. Aquí encontrarás una breve síntesis sin intenciones de originalidad, y sólo como respuesta por haber hecho clic en este enlace.

DATOS BIOGRAFICOS: Se forma en Madrid y participa en la Guerra de la Independencia. En 1818, en Jerez de la Frontera, pierde de una cuchillada el ojo izquierdo. Ocupó cargos administrativos de funcionario de Hacienda (Játiva y Valencia) en el Trienio Liberal, bibliotecario y desde 1847 Director de la "Biblioteca Nacional", secretario perpetuo de la Real Academia Española -en la que ingresó en 1837-, secretario del rey y director de la "Gaceta de Madrid". Buscó participar en la vida política como Diputado sin mucha suerte.

OBRA LITERARIA: "Escribe 103 comedias originales, 64 traducciones, 10 refundiciones, 387 poemas, 400 artículos y escritos publicados en periódicos y 562 notas sobre sinónimos."

Entre las comedias más conocidas destacan " A la vejez, viruelas", escrita en 1817, estrenada en 1824 en función conmemorativa del cumpleaños de Fernando VII, " A Madrid me vuelvo" (1828), "Marcela, o ¿a cuál de los tres?" (1831), " Un tercero en discordia" (1833), "La redacción de un periódico" (1836), "Muérete y verás" (1837), "Medidas extraordinarias o los parientes de mi mujer" (1837), "Ella es él" (1838), "Me voy de Madrid" (1836), "El pelo de la dehesa" (1840), "D. Frutos en Belchite" (1845), "¿Quién es ella?" (1849), "Escuela del matrimonio" (1852), "Los sentidos corporales" (1867), que fue su última obra.

Colaboró en muchos periódicos y revistas, como El Correo literario y mercantil, El Liceo artístico y literario, El Museo de las Familias, Semanario Pintoresco Español, La América, etc.

La lírica, es breve, festiva, ligera, de anacreónticas y letrillas. Sigue el estilo serio de Meléndez Valdés, o el humorístico y satírico. Destacan los títulos "Lo que quieren todos", "El brasero", "Pecados necios y gustos depravados", La desvergüenza, ... el soneto "A la pereza" y la "Epístola a Ventura de la Vega" satirizando en tercetos las costumbres del s. XIX.

GENERALIDADES:El mundo de Bretón tiene parentesco con los artículos de Larra y con los análisis costumbristas de Mesonero Romanos y Estébanez Calderón. Su teatro original venía a cumplir una misión fundamental: llenar el vacío del costumbrismo y de la comicidad, huyendo del «tono mayor» predominante en los románticos, que tendían al pasado histórico o al idealismo fuera de los contornos de lo concreto. Su carácter mordaz le llevó a sostener grandes polémicas, con Larra y con Villergas, sufriendo disgustos y enemistades.

"La comedia de Bretón enlaza con la de Fernández de Moratín y sus continuadores y, a través del costumbrismo, llega a conectar con la alta comedia posromántica. Hace cuadros de la sociedad madrileña de clase media, junto a pinturas de ambiente popular, con intención satírico-didáctica; se diferencia de Moratín por la vivacidad del diálogo y de la acción y por el uso del verso y de la polimetría. Acentúa siempre el aspecto ridículo y cómico. Los tipos principales son petimetres, pedantes, coquetas, paletos, mojigatas, etc. Se le acusó de monotonía y repetición de tipos, así como de inconsistencia de los argumentos, sobre todo en el periodo posterior a la moda romántica, en la que trataba de sobrevivirse a sí mismo. El drama romántico e histórico, se considera mediocre."
