En esta fecha se inaugura en Madrid el primer "Club femenino" creado en España bajo la denominación de "LYCEUM".

En la imagen, de la prensa gráfica del momento, se recoge la puerta de entrada al Club; a la izquierda a su Presidenta María de Maeztu, (también Directora de la Residencia de Señoritas y de la Sección Primaria del Instituto Escuela); y a la derecha a Victoria Kent, Vicepresidenta ("una de las más notables mentalidades femeninas de España").

"La gran pedagoga María de Maeztu fundó en Madrid el Lyceum Club con un grupo que se reunía en la Residencia de Señoritas que ella dirigía, grupo promotor en el que se encontraba María Lejárraga, quien siempre propugnó, sin éxito, un enfoque más social de las actividades, que se plantearan para preparar culturalmente a las jóvenes trabajadoras.

Se constituyó según el modelo internacional (París, Londres, Berlín, Roma, Amsterdam), con secciones de Literatura, Ciencias, Artes Plásticas e Industriales, Social, Música e Internacional.

Sus presidentas de honor eran la reina Victoria Eugenia y la duquesa de Alba, y los cargos directivos los desempeñaban María de Maeztu (presidenta), Victoria Kent e Isabel Oyarzábal de Palencia (vicepresidentas), Zenobia Camprubí (secretaria, labor que continuó Ernestina de Champourcín), Helens Phipps (vicesecrataria) y Amalia Galágarra de Salaverría (tesorera).

Se inauguró con ciento cincuenta socias de todas las tendencias, como se observa en los nombres de la junta directiva y en la participación de personas destacadas como Concha Méndez, Mª Teresa León, Magda Donato o Elena Fortún, la autora de la serie de libros de Celia, cuya vocación literaria se despertó en el Lyceum y gracias, especialmente, a María Martínez Sierra"...

"El club se planteaba objetivos políticos, al promocionar la lucha por los derechos de la mujer y su defensa. Tenía, asimismo, objetivos culturales: su biblioteca fue dirigida por María Lejárraga y por su sala de conferencias pasaron figuras tan importantes de la época como Rafael Alberti, García Lorca, Ricardo Baeza, Unamuno o Benjamín Jarnés.

Se proponía también acciones sociales, destacando la creación de una "Casa de Niños" para hijos de las mujeres trabajadoras. Pero, sobre todo, pretendía proporcionar a las mujeres madrileñas un espacio ("nuestra casita") para reunirse y así formar el espíritu colectivo. Quizá por esta razón, para facilitar la expresión en un espacio propio, se decidió no admitir socios masculinos."
