En especial en los años de la República, cuando en sus conferencias y mítines pide a las mujeres que se formen, que se instruyan, que se cultiven, ... La inquietud procede de "los años más felices" de su vida, cuando ejerció de maestra en Madrid, en una Escuela Nacional. Entonces compartía su vida y su sueldo con Gregorio Martínez Sierra, ya que la paga de Maestra era el único dinero que "entraba en casa", según lo recuerda María en sus Memorias.

Su destino fue Bélgica, y los estudios a ampliar se referían a las nuevas pedagogías. Aquí conoció los sistemas educativos que se desarrollaban en todo tipo de escuelas, entre ellas las relacionadas con las Casas del Pueblo.

Sus recuerdos posteriores están muy unidos a este período formativo, no sólo por lo que le ayudaran en su carrera, sino también en cuanto a sus inclinaciones a los viajes y salidas a el exterior de nuestro país.

En el año 2000, María Martínez Sierra figuró en los medios de comunicación masivos cuando su tomo de memorias, "Gregorio y yo", prohibido por la censura franquista en los años cincuenta (publicado en Méjico, 1953), salió en su primera edición española. Como esta publicación coincidía con unos escándalos sobre supuestos plagios o calcos tanto de una presentadora de televisión como de autores conocidos, la prensa trató la cuestión relacionada de los "negros". Salieron entonces varios artículos sobre María Martínez Sierra, la autora oculta detrás de la firma de su marido, Gregorio Martínez Sierra (1881-1947).
