CONSERVAS EN CALAHORRA

La imagen superior es una de las portadas de un número de su órgano de prensa: "El Conservero Español"

La filoxera arrasó los viñedos riojanos en los primeros años del siglo XX planteando una crisis socio-económica sin precendentes en la región. Se buscaron distintas soluciones al problema. Entre ellas, una de las más eficaces, fue la explotación intensiva de la huerta industrializando los productos a través del embotado y envasado de las conservas.

Este subsector industrial tenía experiencia en La Rioja desde los años sesenta del siglo XIX y ahora con la crisis del viñedo pasó a un primer plano. Se puede decir que fue la salvación económica de la región en las primeras décadas del siglo XX.

La comarca de La Rioja Baja, con cabeza en Calahorra, se convirtió en el motor económico de la provincia, haciendo de otro monocultivo: los productos hortícolas, la base de la economía regional. El repaso de las Matrículas de Contribución Industrial y de los Registros de Sociedades Mercantiles confirman el "boom conservero". Primero en Calahorra y sus poblaciones satélites y a mediados de los años diez en la capital, Logroño, con la expansión de empresas, algunas de las cuales, como la de los Trevijano, fueron señeras en todo el país.

En este contexto se sitúa la industria conservera calagurritana a la que dedicamos esta página. En esta población, cabeza de la Diócesis, funcionaron conserveras, -de algunas presentamos imágenes- que aportaron trabajo y efectivo muy destacado al PIB de la región. Algunos industriales, recordamos el caso de los Trevijano en Logroño, se hicieron multimillonarios, debido también al período favorable intermedio de las dos Grandes Guerras Mundiales.

Los conserveros de Calahorra canalizan sus intereses industriales, comerciales y económicos en general agrupándose en la Asociación Conservera Española inscrita en el Registro de Asociaciones de la Provincia de Logroño el 27 agosto de 1918.

los orígenes del capitalismo riojano
El enfoque fisiocrático de la economía española -la tierra y la renta como base de la riqueza- empieza a quebrarse en los años veinte -s. XX-. En La Rioja sucede lo mismo. En esta década, con algunos precedentes anteriores, y teniendo como motores a las industrias de transformación agraria: vinos y conservas, algunos empresarios inician la acumulación de capitales. Es el fin del hacendado decimonónica y el ascenso de las burguesías industriales y financieras.
